Fruit and vegetable export in
Spain
decreased to 9 per cent in the first half of the year, as shows the
statistics
given by Spanish producer-exporter federation Fepex. Now it comprises
4.8m
tonnes: 2.2m tonnes of vegetables and 2.6m tones of fruits. Total
vegetable
exports dropped by 8 per cent in volume terms, and most significant were
tomato
export volumes – they dropped by 15 per cent to 483,992 tonnes. But
still
the value of the exports remained at €539m – just as it was last
year.
Fruit exports also showed an
important
decrease. The volumes fell by 9.5 per cent to 2.6m tones, and the most
affected
fruit was oranges – it dropped by 11 per cent (to 881,400 tonnes)
According to Fepex’s opinion, the
fall in export volumes reflected a need to accelerate the process of
innovation
in the country’s fresh produce sector to improve the competitiveness of
producers.
